The synth you choose shapes your sound, but there is no single best one. Some are built for deep sound design, some for quick presets, and some for warm analog tones. This guide covers the software synths most used in EDM today, what each does best and how to pick the right one for your style and budget.

The Best Synths for EDM
Xfer Serum 2
Serum became the standard wavetable synth in electronic music, and Serum 2, released in March 2025, added granular, spectral and sample based oscillators plus a clip sequencer. It is great for basses, leads and growls, and it has the largest choice of third party presets. The upgrade was free for Serum 1 owners, and Serum 2 loads Serum 1 presets, so older preset packs still work. Price: $249.
Vital
A wavetable synth with spectral warping and a clear, visual layout. The free Basic version includes the full synth engine, which makes it the best place to start learning wavetable sound design. Paid tiers add more presets and wavetables. Systems: Windows, macOS, Linux.
Reveal Sound Spire
Spire is famous for huge supersaw leads, plucks and chords in trance, big room and progressive house. It combines classic analog style oscillators with FM, sync and vowel modes, and it is still being updated, with stability and CPU improvements in 2026.
Native Instruments Massive X
The modern follow up to the synth that defined dubstep wobbles. Massive X has powerful oscillator modes and flexible routing for aggressive bass, and version 1.7 made every setting automatable in your DAW. Price: $199. The original Massive is still sold for $99 and remains a quick way to get classic reese and wobble sounds.
Kilohearts Phase Plant
A semi modular synth where you build sounds from wavetables, samples, granular and FM sources, then add effects in any order. A favorite for experimental bass music and sound design. Price: $199.
reFX Nexus 5
Nexus is built around presets: load a sound and it already sounds like a finished record. It is perfect for producers who want chart style leads, pads and plucks fast, without deep programming. Version 5 added more synthesis engines and sample import.
Vengeance VPS Avenger 2
A huge hybrid synth with built in arpeggiators, drum loops and layered patches. It suits hands up, psytrance and trance producers who like big, ready to play sounds that can also be edited in depth.
LennarDigital Sylenth1
A classic analog style synth that is still light on your computer. It has been a go to for trance and progressive leads and plucks for years, and it now runs natively on Apple silicon Macs.
u-he Diva
Diva models the circuits of classic analog synths for warm, rich basses and pads. Popular in house, deep house and synthwave. It uses more CPU than most synths, so freeze tracks when your project gets big.
Arturia Pigments 7 and Spectrasonics Omnisphere 3
Two deep hybrid synths for evolving pads, textures and cinematic layers. Pigments makes complex modulation easy to see and control. Omnisphere 3, released in October 2025, adds a very large sound library and costs $499.
How to Choose
- Start free: learn sound design in Vital before you spend money. The skills carry over to every wavetable synth.
- Follow your genre: wavetable synths like Serum suit bass music and future bass; Spire and Sylenth1 suit trance and big room; Diva suits house and analog styles.
- Check the preset market: Serum and Spire have the most preset packs, which gives you more sounds to learn from.
- Watch your CPU: analog modeling synths like Diva need more power, which matters on laptops.
- Try before you buy: most developers offer a demo version.
Get More From Your Synths With Presets
Presets are a fast way to get great sounds and to learn how they are built. Open a preset, look at the oscillators, filters and modulation, then change one setting at a time.
- Serum Presets Sample Pack: 372 presets for future bass, trap, hip hop and other EDM styles, including 115 basses, leads, pads, plucks, arps and FX. They load in Serum and in Serum 2.
- Spire Presets Sample Pack: 100 presets for EDM, house, techno, trance and future bass: 25 basses, 25 leads, 25 pads and 25 plucks.
- EDM MIDI Collection: chord progressions and melodies to play through any synth.
