Updated October 2026. We checked every plugin on this page against the developer’s own site.
You do not need to spend money to get great sounding tools. Some of the plugins below are used on professional records every day, and all of them are free to download from the developer. We grouped them by job, so you can find a synth, a compressor or a reverb quickly. Each entry lists the formats and systems it supports, so you know it will open in your DAW before you download.
A quick note on formats: VST3 works in most DAWs on Windows and Mac, AU is for Logic Pro and other Mac hosts, AAX is for Pro Tools, and CLAP is a newer open format supported by Bitwig, Reaper and a growing list of hosts. Always download from the official links below, not from file sharing sites.

What We Removed From This List
Older versions of this page included a few plugins that are no longer a good choice. SPL Free Ranger is now a paid plugin. Tune It, BeatCounter, the Seven Phases Spectrum Analyzer, Refine and DCAM FreeComp are no longer updated and may not run on current systems. Helm still exists but its developer now focuses on Vital, which is listed above.
